As an amateur, although health-care experienced mother, I wondered a lot whether I should take my child to Dévény exercises or to any kind of physiotherapy. There were arguments for and against it. Deep inside I felt that she is “too stiff”, or that she should be creeping already (based on experiences from my older child), yet for a long time I gave into the many misconceptions like “every child will learn to walk eventually” or that “we didn’t have physiotherapy and yet we grew up”. Fortunately, a very good friend of mine introduced me to Edit, and after six months of exercises and many-many revelations, I realized why physiotherapy is really important!
So let’s see: What problems can early physiotherapy help with?
- loosening tight muscle tone
- strengthening weak muscles
- weak sucking reflex, unwillingness to eat in older babies, inability to chew
- preschool children’s fear at the playground, from heights, from swings, from other children
The first and most important thing to understand is that motor development is the foundation for intellectual development. Few people are aware that, for example, if a too stiff neck is not treated, by 3-4 years of age it can result in attention deficit disorder or other problems.
People who say “we grew up without physiotherapy” should look around and see how many 30 and 40 year olds suffer from severe pain and illnesses, despite their young age. From problems that could have been helped by infant or childhood physiotherapy, or by home exercises that help in recognizing the problem early on. Don’t be fooled by misconceptions, use the FittBaby exercises!
